San Francisco may soon be home to a global climate change think tank, pending a few hurdles. Mayor Newsom and the United Nations are in discussion to revitalize the highly-polluted Hunters Point Shipyard by building a conference center, UN office buildings and incorporate more than 2,000,000 square feet of commercial space. The site is currently undergoing major clean up by the US Navy, EPA, and state regulators. In order for Newsom to establish the center as part of the Bayview-Hunters Point redevelopment, the project will need the approval of the city’s Board of Supervisors as well as investors. The center will focus on solving the world’s pollution dilemmas and foster clean tech business.
“California, in general, and San Francisco, in particular, has been at the forefront of environmental sustainability and justice for many years and all of the right ingredients are here,” said Gavin Power, deputy director of the UN Global Compact.
