Farming’s not just for the back country. Due to recent food scares as well as a trying economy, farming is taking hold throughout the U.S. in all parts including its urban areas. These “farms” range from small garden plots to small-scale farms. Citizens are utilizing abandoned and neglected land as well as under-utilized rooftops to set up their own food production. By developing these farms, residents are able to provide fresh produce locally. Poor neighborhoods can benefit from establishing such gardens to supply themselves with a wide variety of food as well as help build community.
The recently established New Roots farm located in San Diego is part of an unusual experiment among food activists to bring sustainable agriculture within city limits. Under the aegis of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), a non-profit organisation working with refugees worldwide, the immigrant community of City Heights has started an “urban farm” for local residents.
